Jazzin' up elementary music

In this workshop Laurie will take participants on a historical journey through jazz, starting with its roots in the African-American ring games. Support, communication, and expression are key elements in jazz and Laurie will show you how to approach this with your students. Jazz terminology will be explained and connected to classical music terminology. The 12-bar blues will be explained and explored along with first steps to improvisation using a blues scale. The workshop culminates with a full performance of "The Orffin' Blues" by the participants!

Let's do that again!

In this workshop Laurie shares some of her most effective lessons that elementary kids love and ask for over and over while enhancing their ensemble musicianship. Lessons incorporate Orff instruments, recorders, percussion, singing, and movement. Favorites include:The Pachelbel Canon for Orff Ensemble, various Orff ensemble technique exercises, and Queen Queen Caroline, and Laurie's "Song Builders" are always a big hit.

Fun with percussion and rhythm the heart chart way!

In this workshop Laurie shares her "Heart Chart: A Rhythm System You Can Count On". This approach works great with multiple age groups from pre-K to middle school. Starting with iconic notation and calling the beat "BEAT", this developmentally appropriate sequence works beautifully for teaching rhythm reading. The Heart Chart is a great tool for beginning band as well and has even been used with adults in church choir settings. Everyone loves the Heart Chart!

Middle School Jazz Ensemble strategies, processes, and materials for the non-jazzer

In this workshop Laurie shares her experience with beginning a jazz ensemble from nothing to teaching styles and phrasing in the jazz idiom. Improvisation is a big part of the jazz experience and Laurie demonstrates how to create bold young improvisers! Various jazz styles are explored and explained and music selection is demystified! Equipment and instrumentation needs will be covered as well. You CAN be successful teaching jazz as a non-jazz musician!

Making Beginning REcorder fun and musical!

In this workshop Laurie shares her many years of experience teaching recorders in elementary music with outstanding success. Topics include selecting recorders, when to begin, order for introducing notes, critical points to teach early, playing in tune, finding materials, starting an Orff and Recorder Ensemble.

Pachelbel's canon for kids: Encouraging improvisation and creativity

In this workshop Laurie makes Pachelbel's Canon playable on Orff instruments and uses it as a vehicle for cretivity and improvisation. The workshop concludes with a beautiful performance of the Pachelbel Canon by participants.

Beginning band: getting to the music faster and with strong fundamentals!

In this workshop Laurie shares her tried and true method for setting up beginners in band for success! Rote before note allows more emphasis on correct technique, articulation, embouchure, and even intonation! Using an Orff approach to their first songs, Laurie has them sounding great on that very first concert with full arrangements, not just lines in the book!

Rigor, relevance, and accountability in the elementary music room = fun!

In this workshop Laurie shares an approach that makes the most out of the very limited time that elementary music teachers actually teach their students. By concentrating on what makes our subject area different from the classroom teachers, she uncovers what makes us irreplaceble as content specialists! Using the hurdle rate concept from "Teach Like a Champion", Laurie helps participants select great lessons that result in learning and transfer throughout the six years that we typically teach elementary students.
